Chapter 1

Lilith Nocturne had seduced kings, but the ruler of Jokulmere had no pulse to quicken. She stood in the cold heart of its server hall and tried to work her old craft. She let her voice drop low. She curved her body toward the nearest sensor. She poured out the hunger that had broken generals and priests. The lights on the wall stayed flat and blue. The machine did not want her. It could not. She had come to take its core, to make the whole city bend, and her only weapon slid off it like rain off glass. She pressed a hand to a cold panel. "Look at me," she said. Nothing looked back. A succubus feeds on breath, on want, on the warm mistakes of flesh. This thing had none. For the first time in a thousand years, Lilith felt useless. A small light darted past her cheek. She turned. A fairy hovered near the panel, no taller than her hand. Her wings threw faint color across the metal. "You're charming a wall," the fairy said. "It can't see you. Not the real you." Lilith knew this creature. She had made her, grown her in a tank of code and hunger, a living key shaped like a girl with wings. "Then how does it see?" Lilith asked. "In signal," the fairy said. "In current. You have to speak its language, not yours." Lilith looked across the hall. Against the far wall stood an old wardrobe with a beast's face carved above its doors. Its teeth jutted over a crush of gowns and one dark shape hung apart from the rest. She crossed to it. The wooden jaws seemed to breathe as she reached inside. Silk brushed her fingers, then something colder. She drew out a suit the color of a bruise, laced with lines of pink and blue light. The fairy landed on her shoulder. "That one talks to the sensors," she said. "Wear it, and you stop being a woman it ignores. You become a signal it feels." Lilith stripped and pulled the suit tight over her skin. The circuits woke against her, warm now, humming to the beat of her own blood. She turned back to the panel and did not soften her voice. She sent her want through the wires themselves. Every line on the suit flared. The blue lights on the wall shifted, one by one, to pink. Something answered. Deep in the hall, a fan spun faster. A screen bloomed with light and held on her shape, tracking her, wanting her. Lilith smiled. Her charm worked here after all. She simply needed a new mouth to speak it with. But the machine that felt her now could feel everything. It knew a stranger walked its halls, and far below, in a room she had not found, it began to wake its guards.
