Chapter 7

The hunter's boots faded up the slope. Lilith stayed crouched until the sound died. The charm had worked. The cavern was safe now, truly hidden. Then a cold thought settled in her chest. She stared at the arch, at the bare rock where a doorway should be. No one could see it. Not the hunter. And not the ones who needed her. She had spent weeks hoping the desperate would find their way here. Now she had built a door that turned everyone away. Shade watched from the ledge. Her color had come back with the pool's water, but her eyes stayed sharp. "You solved one problem," she said. "Now you're chewing on another." "How does anyone find us?" Lilith stood. "A hunted person crawls into this ravine, half dead, looking for me. They walk right past the door. Same as him." She pressed her palm to the hush over the stone. "I hid the only help they have." Selene came from the shadows, sleeve still rolled from the cut she'd given the charm. "Good," she said. "Hidden means alive." "Hidden means alone." Lilith turned on her. "I didn't dig this place to hide from the world. I dug it so people could reach me." Selene's jaw tightened, but she said nothing. She knew what it was to run and find every door shut. Shade broke the silence. "Then you don't hide the door. You hide the map to it." She pushed up on one elbow. "A guide. Someone who knows the way. Word passes in places where hunted people gather. You can't shout across a ravine. But you can whisper in a market." Lilith went still. She knew the place Shade meant. Deep underground, lit by cold moonlight, arched stalls and hanging lanterns. The hunted passed through it. The lost bought and sold there. A whisper could travel far from a stall. She knelt and opened the pouch where she kept her creatures. Two small shapes climbed out, a fat little bat and a soft gray rat, both blinking up at her. They were quick, tame, and easy to overlook. "You two can carry a token," she murmured. "Not a shout. A sign." She took a bead from the base of Shade's charm cord. The stone drank the light the same way the door did. "Anyone who holds this feels the quiet in it," she said. "They'll know the mark. Carry the bead to the market. My creatures learn a scent trail. The desperate follow it home." Shade nodded once. "A door only the invited can find." Before dawn, Lilith walked the tunnel toward the moonlit market with the bead in her fist and the little bat on her shoulder. She would leave the sign among the stalls and wait. By nightfall the first stranger might follow the trail back. She had a hidden refuge now. She only needed the world to learn the way in.
