Chapter 1

Lily Lilak carried her whole teashop in a canvas bag. Inside sat two chipped cups, a tin of dried rose petals, and a folded sign that read "Every Lonely Soul Welcome." She had brewed tea for strangers on park benches all week. Grimreach frowned at her for it. She wanted a real shop, a warm room where sad people could sit and stop being sad. She had no room. She had no money for one either. So she brewed on the curb again. A woman with red eyes stopped for a cup. Lily poured, smiled, and talked until the woman laughed. Then a shopkeeper shooed them both off his step. "Get a roof or get gone," he snapped. Lily gathered her cups and swallowed the sting. She walked to the empty corner shop she loved. A rent sign hung in the dusty window. The number on it made her stomach drop. She pressed her forehead to the glass and counted her coins by feel. Not enough. Not close. Behind her, a horn honked twice. A taxi rolled up. The driver leaned out, sunglasses pushed high despite the gray sky. "You the tea girl?" Jack Lopez asked. "Folks talk. Somebody left something in my cab weeks ago. Nobody claimed it. Figured a girl giving tea away needs it more than me." He popped the trunk. Inside sat a huge chest, gold and silver, crusted with jewels. Lily laughed. "That's a prop. A movie chest." Jack shrugged. "Can't open it. No keyhole. Drove me crazy." Lily ran her fingers over the lid. A cat wound around her ankles and hopped up beside the chest. It patted a spot near the corner. Lily pressed where the paw had pressed. The lid sprang open. Diamonds spilled over her shoes. Thousands of them. Millions. She sat down hard on the pavement. Jack whistled low and took off his sunglasses. "That's not mine," he said quickly. "I just drove it around." Lily stared at the gleaming pile, then at the rent sign in the window. Her hands shook. She scooped a single diamond and held it to the light. It was real. Heavy. Cold. Enough to buy the corner shop ten times over. "Take some," she told Jack. He shook his head, but she pressed a handful into his palm anyway. Then she stood, wiped her eyes, and walked straight to the landlord's door with the chest dragging behind her. By dusk the corner shop was hers. She had signed the papers. She had the key in her pocket and the chest locked in the back room. She stood in the empty, dusty space and turned in a slow circle. She finally had her roof. Then she saw the broken window, the caved-in ceiling, and the rats. And she understood the diamonds had bought her four bare walls, nothing more. Word of the chest would spread fast. Someone would come asking where a poor tea girl found a fortune.
