Chapter 1

Lily Summers woke at dawn and reached for the anklet she wore every day. Her fingers closed on nothing. She sat up fast on the porch of her hilltop farmhouse, where vines climbed the wooden walls. The anklet was gone. Someone had crept into her camp while she slept and taken it. That anklet was hers by a promise. She'd fastened it on the night she swore off shoes forever, and she meant to keep both. She ran barefoot across the grass, skirt flaring, and studied the ground. Bare footprints crossed hers near the porch steps. But a night breeze had blurred them into shallow dents. They pointed toward the woods, then split. One set went left toward the meadow. Another went right, toward the water. She crouched and traced each one. Both looked equally fresh. Lily's stomach knotted. She didn't know who took the anklet. If she chose the wrong trail, the thief would slip away for good. A guess could cost her everything. She needed to know the true direction before she moved. She hurried inside. On a shelf sat a clear glass bottle her grandmother had left her. Inside, a cluster of fireflies drifted around a painted compass face. Grandmother had promised the fireflies would answer to things you loved. Lily had never dared test it. Now she uncorked the bottle and held it flat on her palm. "Find my anklet," she whispered. The fireflies stirred. Their glow brightened, then swung as one toward the eastern side of the glass. They pressed against it, wings flashing, pulling toward the water. The left trail was a trick. The thief had gone right. Lily corked the bottle and ran. The false footprints had nearly fooled her. She followed the fireflies down the slope, past a tall birch tree with pale bark and aqua-tinted leaves. Its branches shivered though no wind blew. She slowed. Something clung to the lowest limb. Moths hung there in a soft cluster. Their wings carried markings shaped like tiny faces. The faces seemed to watch her pass. Lily's skin prickled, but she kept the bottle raised. The fireflies still pulled east, past the tree. Beyond the birch, the ground turned to mud along a stream. There, pressed deep and clear, was a single fresh footprint. Larger than her own. Beside it lay a torn scrap of green cloth snagged on a root. Lily picked it up. The fabric was fine, stitched with silver thread she had never seen in any village near her hill. This was no wandering thief. Whoever took the anklet came from somewhere she didn't know, dressed in cloth she couldn't afford. She stood at the stream's edge, bottle glowing east, cloth in her fist. The trail was real now. But it led away from everything familiar, toward a stranger who had planned this well.
