Chapter 1

Linnea meant to cure the whole cove, but the medicine kept dying first. Tonight they knelt over a sick child in a back room in Husband Cove, pressing both palms to the boy's hot forehead. The fever slid out of him and into Linnea, a bitter heat that made their hands shake. That part always worked. Linnea could pull sickness out of anyone. The trouble came after. Beside them sat the boy's fever caught in a clay bowl, glowing faint green. It was already turning brown at the edges. Linnea had mixed it with a healing brew an hour ago, and the brew was souring. By morning it would be useless slop. They had ruined nine batches this week the same way. Their whole dream, a quiet shop that healed every neighbor who wandered in, kept rotting overnight in the mixing bowls. "You're frowning at that bowl like it owes you money," said Soraya from the doorway. Soraya was Linnea's oldest friend, the one who'd hauled the boy here in a wheelbarrow when his mother panicked. Soraya still had the boy's family waiting outside—a father, two kids, all of them counting on Linnea. Soraya crossed the room and touched the warm clay. "It won't keep, will it." "Nothing keeps," Linnea said. "The magic works. The medicine won't hold still long enough to give away." Soraya walked to the windowsill, where a potted plant sat in the moonlight. Its blue and purple blossoms stayed open at night, and the leaves layered over each other like cupped hands. "You told me this plant never wilts," Soraya said. "You told me it holds care longer than anything you own." Linnea stared at it. The plant had lived on that sill for two years without a single dead petal. Whatever it did, it did not spoil. Linnea lifted the sour bowl and poured the last spoonful of glowing brew straight into the plant's soil. The leaves shivered. The green light sank down through the dirt and did not brown. It settled into the roots and held there, steady, patient, alive. "It's storing it," Linnea whispered. They pressed a fresh brew to the soil and watched the plant drink it in. An hour passed. Two. The medicine stayed bright. The plant kept it the way a cellar keeps ice. Soraya laughed and opened the door. The waiting family crowded in. Linnea drew one dose from the plant's roots and it poured out clear and strong, no rot at all. The boy drank it and his color returned by dawn. But the plant's leaves drooped when Linnea took the dose, then slowly lifted again. One plant. One root system. Linnea counted the families already lined up outside the window, more than the leaves could hold. The shop could open now. It simply could not yet cure them all.
