Chapter 5

Lira had sold Cassimer a lie. She had told him she served a foreign court, that a hidden master sent her orders by courier. He had swallowed it because it matched the plot he already feared. But a lie needs bones. Cassimer would test it. He would ask for proof, and if she gave him nothing, he would catch the gap and hang her by it. She needed a courier, a message, a witness who could swear the foreign master was real. So she went to the one man who already knew too much about her. The roadside inn sat quiet under a low sky. Inside, the young innkeeper stood at the hearth, feeding a small fire. Vines wrapped the stone, and pale flowers climbed the mantel. He was the one who had seen her seal, recognized her gryphon, and tried to sell her secrets before she paid him quiet. He turned when she entered. He did not smile. He remembered her preferences and hated that he did. "Room four," he said, though she had not asked. He kept it ready out of habit, not welcome. "I need a favor, Kenji," Lira said. "Not a room. A story." He wiped his hands. "I keep no stories." "You keep guests. Their names. Their faces." She set coins on the mantel, beside a tallow candle heavy with old drips. "A man will come asking. Lord Cassimer, or his steward. He will want to know if a foreign courier stayed here. One who met me." Kenji looked at the coins, then at her. "No courier came." "He will have. In your book. A traveler, dark cloak, foreign coin. He took a room, waited one night, left before dawn. You saw him hand me a sealed letter." "That is a lie." "It is a name in a ledger," Lira said. "You write false names for me already. One more costs you nothing." Kenji stood still. The fire popped. He did not want her secrets, and he did not want her ruin brought to his door. She watched him weigh it. A refusal meant Cassimer might come, find nothing, and dig into why. That road led to the inn, and to Kenji. "One entry," he said at last. "One night. Then you do not come back for a season." "Agreed." He took a pen and opened his guest book. He wrote a foreign name in a plain hand, a date, a room. When Cassimer's man came, he would find it, ink dry and ordinary. Proof a suspicious lord would trust more than any word from Lira's own mouth. Lira left the coins and walked out. The lie had bones now. Cassimer would chase his foreign master and find a trail she had planted. But Kenji held one more true thing about her now, written in his own book. She had bought his silence with a fresh secret, and a man that careful never forgot where a secret was buried.
