Chapter 1

Lisa wanted a bookshop in Dromedary Pass, and she wanted it to hide secrets. She stood at the mouth of the pass with her dog and counted the people crossing it. Lovers who couldn't meet in town needed a safe place. Her shop would be that place. But first she had to learn when the pass went quiet, and she didn't know the town's rhythm yet. She had moved into the loft above her future shop only three days ago. The place smelled of old paper and cold stone. From the big upstairs window she could watch the pass all day. But watching told her nothing she could trust. The crowds thinned, then swelled again, with no pattern she could name. Her three-legged pitbull leaned against her knee. She rubbed his blue nose and spoke to him like a partner. "We need the empty hours," she said. "Show me." He only wagged and limped toward the door. So Lisa decided to stop guessing and start walking. She clipped the dog's leash and went down to the pass itself. She would mark the traffic with her own eyes, hour by hour, until a shape appeared. At midday the pass was packed. Carts, traders, shouting children. By late afternoon it still churned. Lisa's feet hurt. Her notebook filled with useless numbers. The rhythm stayed hidden, and doubt crept in. Maybe she had chosen the wrong town. Then her dog froze and growled. Ahead, coiled on a sun-warmed rock, lay a serpent with ember-bright scales. Travelers scattered around it. The creature hissed, and the whole stretch of the pass emptied in moments. Lisa pulled her dog back and watched. The serpent basked, unbothered, and no one came near. She found an old signpost beside the rock, its wood cracked and its runes glowing faint. A trader hurried past her, eyes on the serpent. "It suns itself every evening," he said. "Right when the light hits that rainbow cactus. Folks clear out till full dark. Nobody wants its bite." Lisa looked past him. A tall cactus stood near the rock, its ridges banded in bright colors. The low sun lit it like a torch. And she understood. The serpent kept the same hour the town kept nothing. Every evening it drove people off and left the pass silent. She wrote it down with a steady hand. Dusk to dark. The empty hours she needed, handed to her by a snake. But the shape that solved one problem opened another. The quiet hours belonged to the serpent. Any lover who came to meet in secret would have to pass that rock, in that light, with those fangs waiting. Lisa stared at the ember scales and felt the new weight land. She had found her hours. Now she had to make them safe.
