Chapter 6

Lola had the map now. She just could not walk it. The debt sat inside her like a stone. She had asked Lilly, her demon teacher, three times what she truly owed. Each time Lilly gave the same flat answer: learn to afford it. So Lola stopped asking and started following. When Lilly left the tower at dusk, Lola went too, her phoenix chick warm on her shoulder. The path ended at a cave. Its mouth glowed. Crystals grew across the rock, pale blue and violet, throwing soft light on the ground. Lilly stood inside, holding a crystal lantern that hummed against the walls. She did not turn. "You followed," Lilly said. "Good. Debts are paid where they were made." "You made mine here?" Lola asked. "I make all of them here." Lilly lifted the lantern. Glowing mushrooms lit the deeper dark. Something moved past them. Lola saw thin gray shapes with folded wings, clinging to the ceiling. Vultures, but wrong. Their eyes shone the same blue as the crystals. "They eat debt," Lilly said. "Not gold. Not fear. The weight a student carries and cannot name. Yours grew too big to hold." Lola's throat went tight. "You brought me to feed me to them?" "No." Lilly's mouth was flat. "To feed them the debt. Not you. Hold still." One bird dropped from the ceiling. It landed before Lola and stared. The phoenix chick flared bright, ready to burn it. Lola pressed a hand over the chick to stop it. She made herself stand still. The vulture opened its beak. It did not bite. It pulled. Lola felt the stone in her chest tug loose, sharp and cold. Her knees shook. She saw, for one breath, what the debt had been: not the crystal, not the spells. It was the promise she had made without knowing. She had agreed to owe Lilly whatever Lilly named. That blank promise was the debt. The bird swallowed it whole. The pulling stopped. Lola stood straight. Her chest felt light and strange, like a room after the furniture is carried out. "It's gone," she said. "The old debt. Yes." Lilly lowered the lantern. "You paid it by seeing it. That is the whole lesson. You cannot afford what you cannot name." Lola looked at the crystal in her pocket, the one that held the spell about her parents. "Then I can name that one now. Nine thousand years. I know what it costs." "You know the price," Lilly said. "You still cannot pay it. But now you owe me nothing. What you take from the tower next, you take clean." She turned toward the cave mouth. "Come. There is more to learn, and it will cost you too. But you will always see the cost first." Lola followed her out. The stone was gone from her chest. In its place sat a new, colder question: how a ten-year-old could ever earn nine thousand years.
