Chapter 6

Lena came to the fort at dusk. She carried her small black book and a debt Lorn still owed. "You promised to teach the name," she said. "The officer who betrayed my brother's unit. Say it aloud in your school. That was the price." Lorn nodded. He had known this hour would come. But he had learned a hard thing since the auditor left. "The Empire listens," he said. "Speak a name in a hall of veterans and one of them repeats it in a tavern. It travels back. The moment I teach it, I aim a lantern at this whole fort." Lena's jaw tightened. "I did not falsify a ledger for a broken promise." Cassandra Vex stood at the wall, cleaning a blade she had already cleaned twice. She did not trust the greeter, and she did not hide it. "Names get out," she said flatly. "So don't give her a name. Give her the man." Lorn stopped. Cassandra rarely handed him a plan he could use. "Say it plain," he said. "The officer visits the pleasure keep two days from now," Cassandra said. "The one with the glass baths. I've watched him. He goes soft there. Bring her. Let her see his face. No word spoken. No word to carry." Lena's hand went still on her book. "You know where he'll be." "I know where men like him go to feel clean," Cassandra said. Two nights later they crossed to the bathhouse keep. Its towers curved like blown glass, lit from inside with pale blue light. Steam drifted from round windows the size of wagon wheels. Lorn brought Lena up a side stair. Cassandra waited below in shadow, one hand near her thigh. Through a curved pane they watched the bath hall. Officers lounged in the steaming water. Lorn touched Lena's sleeve and pointed to a heavy man with a scarred brow, laughing, a wine cup in his fist. "That is the man from your brother's letter," Lorn said, low. "That is his face." Lena did not move for a long time. She opened her book. She did not write his name. She drew his face instead, quick lines, the scar, the laugh. Then she closed it. "Now I know him," she said. "No one else has to hear it." "The debt is paid?" Lorn asked. "The debt is paid," she said. "You taught me the man. That was enough." Then Cassandra climbed the stair behind them, breathing hard. "He's leaving early," she said. "Two guards with him. And one of them looked up at this window." She stared at Lorn. "He saw us. He'll ask the keeper who rented the upper stair." Lena's face went pale. "My name is on the keeper's book," she whispered. "The city greeter. They'll match it to the ledger."
