Chapter 4

For three days Lilith worked her way into the house. Lorne watched from the corners. She and Damien walked the grove together each afternoon, under the pink blossom trees that shed soft light on the path. Damien laughed easier with her. He touched her hand when he thought no one saw. Lorne saw. He also saw the trap he could not name, closing. On the fourth night, Lilith found Lorne outside the cabin. Blossoms drifted between them. She spoke low. "It's working too well," she said. "He's falling. That's what springs Nyx's snare. The more he wants me, the tighter it pulls." "Then slow it," Lorne said. "That was the bargain." "I have slowed it." Her red eyes held his. "It isn't enough. The trap doesn't need me to try. It needs him to want. He already does." Lorne gripped his staff. The blue runes woke. He had bought eyes on the boy, and the eyes had shown him the worst thing. The danger was not Damien's dishonesty. It was Damien's heart. "What does the snare do when it closes?" he asked. Lilith did not soften it. "Nyx takes him. Body and will. He becomes hers, like I became hers. There is no undoing it once it shuts." Lorne stood a long moment. He let the silence sit. Then he made his choice. "Tell him the truth," he said. "All of it. What you are. What Nyx sent you to do. What you'll cost him if he keeps wanting you." Lilith stared. "That breaks my task. Nyx will know the second I speak it. She'll never give my name back." "She won't need to." Lorne set the staff down. "A trap built on wanting dies when the wanting turns to fear. Give the boy the truth, and let him choose to stop." She went inside. Lorne followed to the doorway. Damien sat by the fire. Lilith knelt before him and spoke plainly. She named herself a demon of lust. She named Nyx her master. She named the seduction as the hook that would drag him under. Damien's face changed. The soft, open thing Lorne had watched grow now cracked. His blue eyes went cold and sharp. He pulled his hand from hers. "You lied to me," he said. "Yes," Lilith said. "Now you know." Damien stood and backed away from her. The wanting was gone. Fear and anger took its place. Outside, a shriek tore through the grove. The blossom trees shuddered. Colored light burst above the branches and vanished. Nyx's trap had failed. It fed on desire, and the desire was dead. Lorne breathed out. He had saved the boy. But he saw what it cost. Lilith had spent her only bargaining chip. Nyx knew her servant had turned. And somewhere above the shaking trees, the fairy was already deciding how to make them all pay.
