Chapter 1
The shadows had found their house again, and Lucien Vale had six hours to move the woman he loved somewhere they could not follow. He stood at the window and counted. Three dark shapes crossed the yard last night. By dawn there were five. His family had run from these hunters for more years than he could name, all because an ancestor made a bargain and never paid it. Lucien did not run. He watched. And the pattern told him the same thing it always told him: they were closing in.
He did not speak her name, even to himself. Naming her would mark her. So he only reached for her hand and said, "Pack light. We leave before dark."
He knew one place the shadows had never breached. His grandmother had spoken of it once, a stone cottage built by the family long ago, hidden where no road led. He had never gone. Going meant admitting he could no longer hold the ground he stood on. He admitted it now.
They walked through woods until the trees thinned. The cottage waited there, low and dark, its stone walls thick with moss. Carved marks ringed every window and the heavy door. Lucien pressed his palm to the wood. It was warm, which was wrong for old stone at dusk.
"Will it hold them?" she asked.
"Not by itself." He drew the chain from under his shirt. The relic hung from it, blackened silver wrapped in thorn-shaped vines, a violet crystal at its center. Lightning seemed trapped inside the stone. His grandmother had called it the key that fit no lock but one. He had carried it for years and never understood how to use it.
Now he saw. The carved door held a shape he had missed, a keyhole set into the oldest mark. The relic's frame matched it tooth for tooth.
Behind them, the woods went silent. The shadows had followed. They pooled between the trees, darker than the dusk, and began to slide forward across the ground.
"Inside," Lucien said. He pushed her through the door and stepped in after. Then he set the crystal against the keyhole and turned it.
The carved marks flared violet, one after another, racing around the frame. The door sealed itself. A wall of pale light spread across every window. The shadows struck it and recoiled. They pressed, slid, searched for a seam, and found none.
Lucien's knees nearly gave. For the first time in his life, the hunters stood outside and could not reach in. He turned and looked at the woman he loved, safe within stone and light.
Then he looked back at the sealed door. The crystal had cracked. A thin black line split the violet, and inside it, something small had begun to move. The wall would hold. But not forever, and now he knew the cost. The relic had let something in with them.
