Chapter 1

Lucifer wanted God's throne, and he had learned that the shortest road to it ran through two brothers in a field. He was the first angel to fall. He had laughed when he hit the ground. Since then he had studied the gate that guards Heaven, mapping each weak place. But a gate does not open for a prisoner. It opens for a conqueror, and a conqueror needs an army of the willing. So Lucifer came to Nod, where men were new and grief was newer, to teach the first lesson of his war. He would show that God rejects His own, and that the rejected will follow anyone who names their pain. He found Cain alone at the field's edge. Cain was the elder brother, broad and bearded, his hands cracked from the soil he worked. He crouched over his scattered grain. God had turned from it. Days ago that same God had bent low to breathe in the smoke of Abel's lamb. Lucifer sat beside him. He did not look like an angel. He looked like a tired man who understood. "You gave Him the best of what you grew," Lucifer said. "He barely glanced at it." Cain's jaw worked. "The fault is mine." "No." Lucifer kept his voice soft. "The fault is His. He chose. He chose your brother and left you in the dirt. That is not justice. That is favoritism." Across the field, Abel walked among his flock. He was younger, slighter, his dark hair loose. A sheep pressed its woolly side against his leg. Abel scratched its ears and laughed. The animal watched him with calm eyes. Everything Abel touched seemed to thrive. Cain stared. Something hard moved behind his face. "Look at him," Lucifer murmured. "Beloved for nothing. You bled for your harvest. He is handed grace like a gift." "What would you have me do?" Cain asked. His voice shook. Lucifer leaned close. "Take back what was stolen. A God who plays favorites does not deserve the brother He favors." Cain rose. His shadow fell long across the grain. He walked toward Abel, and his hands had already curled into fists. Abel looked up and smiled, the sheep still at his heel. "Brother. Come, walk the field with me." Cain lifted a stone from the ground. Lucifer did not follow. He watched from the field's edge. He saw the stone rise. He saw it fall. He heard the sheep bolt and bleat across the empty grass. When it was done, Cain stood over his brother, shaking, staring at his red hands as though they belonged to someone else. Lucifer smiled. He had made the first murder. He had proven his lesson true: God's children could be turned against God. The gate had not opened. But he had found his key. Now he needed many more Cains, and he would gather them one grievance at a time.
