Chapter 3

The walls hid Lucifer, but he had never spent his own power inside them. He did not know if his craft would stir God's gaze. A blind spot that broke the moment he worked was no shelter at all. He had to test it. So he raised a small roof of his own against the inner wall, a rough shed of timber and nailed boards, built to look like a man's handiwork. He laid every plank by hand. Then, beneath it, he reached for his power and let it burn. The air under the roof went cold. Shadows bent toward him. He pushed harder, fire crawling along his arms, the kind of force that had always drawn God's eye like a wound in the world. He waited for the searching pressure to fall. It did not come. The gaze passed over the city and slid away, blind to the light beneath Cain's walls. Lucifer laughed low. The shelter held. Here he could work his full strength unseen. Then a voice broke the city's quiet. It came from no mouth. It fell on the stones like weight, and the walls themselves seemed to lean. Lucifer knew it. He had heard it before he fell. "Cain." Cain dropped his stone and clutched his head. "I hear it," he gasped. "He is speaking to me." Lucifer stood rigid under his small roof. The voice had not called his name. God spoke only to the marked man. The blind spot hid Lucifer from sight, but it did not close the city to God's voice. "Where is your brother?" the voice asked Cain, though both of them knew the answer. "The ground has opened its mouth for his blood. Why do you build walls to shut Me out?" Cain sank to his knees between the rising stones. His lips moved. He was answering. Lucifer watched his one soul bow toward the thing he meant to overthrow, and his throat tightened. He could not be seen here. He could not be heard. But God could still reach past him, straight to the man whose grief he had farmed. Then the voice turned. Not to Lucifer's name, but to the empty air beside the shed where he stood. "I see the walls rise," it said. "I see who teaches My child to hide. You cannot take by stealth what was never yours." Lucifer went cold. The gaze had not found him. The voice had. God did not need to look to know he was there. The voice faded. Cain stayed kneeling, shaking. Lucifer stepped out from under his small roof. The shelter worked. His power ran free inside these walls, unwatched. That was the victory, and it was real. But the test had answered more than he asked. He was hidden from the eye. He was not hidden from the mouth. And now God had warned Cain, aloud, that the man beside him came to steal. The walls kept Lucifer unseen. They could not keep his soul from being told the truth.
