Chapter 11

Morning came gray at the edge of the broken cold. Lumina stood at the base of the great tree, the host of starlit creatures gathered behind her. Their bodies glowed like small pieces of the night sky, blood shining through their skin like rivers of stars. They were ready to march. But when Lumina looked into the deeper dark beyond the shattered wall, she saw nothing. The cold hid its own center. She could not lead her creatures into a darkness without knowing where its heart lay. "I can feel it," she said. "But I can't find it. If I send them in blind, the cold will take them one by one." Heart Solia stepped close, leaves and yellow flowers trailing from her hair. She had been part of Lumina since the merging, born from the heart itself. She took Lumina's hand. "Then don't march yet," she said. "You know this forest through its roots. Ask the roots where the cold begins." Lumina knelt and pressed both palms to the frozen soil. She reached down, past the healed groves, past the broken barrier, into the dark ground beyond. The cold bit at her light. She did not fight it. She followed it, root by root, the way water finds the lowest place. Heart Solia knelt beside her and added her own light to the search. Together they traced the cold backward toward its source. The answer rose in Lumina's mind like a picture drawn in lines of frost. She saw a path. She saw the exact heart of the cold, buried deep where no root had ever grown warm. The path curved and doubled, but it was clear. She knew every turn now. Celsius Heartwood came through the trees, white flowers trembling in her green hair. She had guided Lumina since the first days at the heart, always steady, always sure. She looked at Lumina's face and read what had happened there. "You found it," she said. "I found it," Lumina answered. She rose. The map of the cold glowed behind her eyes, marked with every step, every safe root, every place the frost ran thin. "The center sits at the far edge, below the deepest ground. There's a path in. I can lead them straight to it now." Celsius studied the dark, then the waiting host. "Knowing the way is not the same as walking it," she said. "The center will fight harder than the wall did." Lumina turned to her creatures. The largest of them, the one that had pledged to guard her, lifted its head and watched her with pale eyes. "We don't go in blind anymore," she told them. "I know where the cold is born. Tomorrow we walk to its heart and end it." The host stirred, their light brightening as one. The way was found. The last march had a direction. But the deepest cold still waited at the end of it, and it knew they were coming.
