Chapter 17

Lumina walked home from the mansion with a hard truth in her chest. The elders had drawn her power out through the star-tipped wand and split it among themselves. Now a shadow of it lived in Celestia Starveil too. Lumina felt the loss like a missing tooth. Her power was scattered. Sharing it had bought time, but the forest's true heart still slept past the dark wall. She stopped in a clearing and knelt. Her guard creature pressed close, its starlit veins glowing in the dusk. "No one should hold this power but me," she said. "Not the elders. Not another fairy. I woke the heart. I carry the forest. If my body can't hold it, then I need a body that can." The idea frightened her. Her body was still the one her mother gave her. But it tore under the weight. It burned when the power surged. She could not guard the forest in a shell that broke. She had to give this body up and build a new one made to carry the whole forest without cracking. Heart Solia rose from within her, the fairy shape of her merged heart. "You would leave your first body behind," Heart Solia said. "You would never grow old. You would never die." "Then the power stays safe," Lumina answered. "No one else will hold it wrong." She called the star-tipped wand to her hand. It came humming through the roots, its moons and tiny stars swinging. She raised it and reached inward for every thread of her scattered power. It answered. Light poured back through the earth, drawn home from the far groves. The starlit host felt the pull and howled across the forest. Above her hands a great emblem bloomed. It spun with gold and pink light, layered like petals, ringed with bright stars. Lumina pushed her old body toward it. She let her skin, her bones, her small tired shape dissolve into the glow. Pain flared, then washed away. The emblem drank her and remade her. When the light faded, a new Lumina stood in the clearing. Her wings spread wide and steady, larger than before but calm now, built to hold the fire. Her hair fell past her waist and pooled on the grass at her feet. The forest's whole power hummed inside her without burning. It fit at last. The guard creature bowed its head. Heart Solia smiled. "It holds," she said. "You will live forever now." Lumina looked at her hands. They did not shake. The power was hers alone and safe inside a body made to bear it. But the wand still glowed with the last thread she had pulled from Celestia Starveil. That fairy was empty now, and somewhere in the forest she had felt her borrowed power ripped away. Lumina turned toward the dark wall. The true heart still slept. Now she was strong enough to reach it.
