Chapter 1

Lumis Frost had six eyes, and not one of them had looked at a friend in three winters. They lived alone in a cave of ice and stone, far from any village. Their white fur carried faint blue streaks, soft as frost on glass. Lumis believed this fur was the reason the world kept its distance. So Lumis kept its distance too. The one thing they wanted most—someone who looked past the fur and saw the soul—felt as far away as the sun through storm clouds. Each morning Lumis checked the small mailbox beside the cave door. Each morning it stayed empty. No letters. No visitors. Only the welcome mat, red and clean, waiting for feet that never crossed it. Lumis swept it anyway. The sweeping was a habit, a small lie that someone might come. This morning, a sound broke the quiet. A thin, high cry came from the crystals near the garage. Lumis froze. Then they crept closer, all six eyes searching. A small grey and white cat sat trapped between two slabs of frosty rock. She was half Lumis' size, soaked and shivering. One paw was wedged tight. When she saw Lumis, she did not run. She only looked up and let out another cry. Lumis' first instinct was to hide. A creature would scream at a six-eyed beast. It always did. But the cat cried again, weaker now, and Lumis could not turn away. "Hold still," Lumis whispered. The cat went still at the sound. Lumis knelt and gripped the top slab. Ice bit into their fingers. They pulled. The rock shifted an inch, then stuck. Lumis braced both feet and pulled harder. Their muscles burned. With a crack, the slab rolled free. The cat tumbled out and landed in the snow. Lumis expected her to bolt. She did not. She limped forward, pressed her small body against Lumis' leg, and looked straight up into all six eyes. No fear. No scream. Only trust. Something inside Lumis broke open. For three winters they had been invisible. Now this small creature saw them—truly saw them—and chose to stay. "You're hurt," Lumis said softly. They scooped her up. She fit in two cupped hands, light as a bundle of cloth. Her heart beat fast against Lumis' palm. Lumis carried her across the clean red mat and through the dark mouth of the cave. Inside, where no guest had ever sat, they set her by the warmest stone. She watched every move Lumis made. She did not look away. "I'm Lumis," they said. The cat blinked, slow and calm. For the first time in three winters, Lumis was not alone. But the cat's trapped paw hung wrong, swollen at the joint. She needed care Lumis did not know how to give. And care meant leaving the cave. It meant facing the village and the eyes that always turned away.
