Chapter 1

Luna Brightwell had promised the soldiers a place to heal, and she still owned no land to build it on. She stood at the edge of a frozen field in Arcticmaw, boots sinking in old snow. Her blue hair glowed against the gray morning. Behind her, three wagons waited, filled with survivors from the war. They watched her with tired eyes. Every one of them had come home to nothing. Luna had told them she would fix that. Now she had no ground to keep her word. A man crossed the field toward her, hard hat catching the light. Frank Carpenter carried a rolled paper under one arm and stepped over the ice like he owned it. Luna had hired him weeks ago to build the haven she couldn't yet start. He had waited, patient, while she chased land that kept slipping away. "You look like someone who lost a fight," Frank said. He stopped beside her and squinted at the empty field. "The council said no again this morning," Luna said. "They won't sell to me. They think a war girl can't run a home for war people." Frank unrolled the paper. It was a building plan, drawn in careful lines. "I already know where the kitchens go," he said. "I've been ready. You just need dirt under it." Luna's hands shook. Not from the cold. "There's no dirt left to buy. Every plot near town is spoken for." Frank tapped a spot on his plan. Then he looked past her, at the wagons, at the thin faces. His jaw tightened. "There's the old estate on the ridge," he said. "Big stone place. Empty for years. Owner died with no family." "A mansion," Luna said. "I can't afford a mansion." "You don't buy it. You claim it." Frank rolled the plan shut. "Abandoned property. The council has to grant it to anyone who'll fill it and fix it. It's their own law. They can't say no." Luna stared at him. Hope hurt worse than despair. "You're sure?" "I built half this town. I know its rules." He started walking. "Come see it before you decide." They climbed the ridge together. The mansion rose from the snow, wide and stately, its windows dark. Guarded stone gates framed the entrance. It was vast enough to hold every soul in her wagons and more. Luna pressed her hand to the cold front door. Inside, she could already picture beds, warm rooms, quiet places for broken people to mend. That afternoon she filed the claim. The council clerk read the law, frowned, and stamped it. The estate was hers. Luna walked back to the wagons at dusk. "We have a home," she told the survivors. They wept. But Frank pulled her aside, his face grim. He knocked on a beam. It crumbled to powder in his hand. "The land is yours," he said quietly. "The house is rotting from the inside. We move everyone in, or we fix it. We can't do both before winter."
