Chapter 4

Luna led the horses behind the bakery and unhitched them in the shadow of the wall. Her breath fogged in the cold lane. She was tying the last knot when a folded notice blew against her boot. She picked it up and squinted at the heavy ink. An unclaimed parcel near Nettlevale. Filing opened at sunrise. Any claimant must appear in person, name on the ledger, face to the clerk. Luna folded the paper twice and pressed it to her chest. Land. Real land. And the only door to it ran straight through the place her face was nailed to every post. She rode out before sunrise. The parcel sat in a hollow ringed by stone, wild grass to the knee. Luna walked the edge and counted paces. She would not wait for the clerk. She would not surface first as a name. She would surface as a place. By noon she had hauled the first beams from the carriage and set them in the soft earth. Glass panes she had hoarded for years went up next, framed in dark wood, with a heart carved above the door. The greenhouse rose crooked but whole. Herbs from her cellar went in by dusk. At the center of the hollow she planted a sapling she had carried wrapped in wet cloth. Its bark cooled under her palm and its leaves lit blue in the failing light, soft as breath. Beside it she dragged a carved stone she had paid for in coin she could not spare — a robed figure with hands folded, eyes closed. She knelt and pressed her thumb to the words at its base. We are born different. We strive to heal. Then she turned to the road and rode straight for Nettlevale. The clerk's hall was already half full. Luna pulled back her hood and gave her true name. The quill scratched. A boy by the door saw her face and bolted into the street, and she knew the posters would follow within the hour. But the ledger was signed. The parcel was hers. Behind her in the hollow, glass caught the dawn and a blue tree glowed above a stone woman with folded hands — a claim no clerk could unwrite, and a trail straight to her door.
