Chapter 1
Luna Frost dreamed of a place where broken magic could rest. She wanted to build it in the far tundra, where old spells had been left to die in the cold. For now she ran a small shop and lived above it, in a rooftop apartment tucked under a steep, snow-topped roof. String lights glowed in every window. Potted herbs crowded the sills. It was warm and safe, but it was not the tundra, and it was not enough.
That night, the floor of her shop began to hum.
Luna set down her tea and pressed her palm to the boards. The wood was warm. Something pushed up between two planks. A pale green shoot broke through the floor, then a bud, then a flower with petals the color of frost. She had never planted anything there. She had never seen a bloom like it.
Her ring answered before she could. The purple stone on her hand grew hot, then hotter, until she gasped and shook her fingers. The heat did not burn her. It pulsed, matching the beat of the flower's glow.
"Find me," the flower whispered.
Luna knelt closer. The voice came from inside the petals, thin as wind under a door. Cold air breathed up from the crack in the floor, and it did not smell like her shop. It smelled like snow and open sky. It smelled like the tundra she had only ever imagined.
"Find you where?" she asked.
The flower did not answer in words. Instead the ring flared one last time, and a picture filled her mind. She saw a frozen plain under a green sky. She saw magic there, buried and forgotten, waiting under the ice. The vision hit her so hard she sat back on the floor.
Then it faded. The flower's glow dimmed. Its petals curled and fell, and it sank back into the crack as if it had never grown. The boards sealed over. The hum stopped. The shop was quiet again.
But her ring stayed warm. Luna held it to her chest and felt it tug, gentle and steady, pointing north.
She understood now. The magic she wanted to save was not a dream for someday. It was real, it was calling, and it was buried in the very place she had always feared to go. The flower had shown her the way. The ring would not let her forget it.
Luna climbed the stairs to her cozy loft and pulled a canvas bag from the closet. She packed dried moonberries, a blanket, and her father's old map. The ring pulsed against her skin the whole time, warm as a live coal.
By morning she had made her choice. She would follow the call north, into the cold, and find whatever the flower wanted her to find. She locked her shop, shouldered her bag, and stepped out into the snow.
