Chapter 1

Luna Shimmer held her last prototype against her chest and knew it was useless until it got wet. She had sewn six pieces of lingerie, each designed to turn clear and clinging when soaked. That was the whole dream: a boutique where every piece looked irresistible wet. But her rented room had only a dripping sink, and a dripping sink could not test a thing. She needed real water, falling water, and a place with no eyes on her. So she walked. The trail cut across pale sand toward the mountains, and steam rose ahead between the rocks. A hidden spring. Luna's heart pounded. She slipped past the warm pool and found a cave behind it. Inside, a carved stone shower poured rain from above, soaking every surface. Her hands shook as she pulled on the prototype and stepped under the downpour. The water hit. The fabric drank it in and turned to glass against her skin. It worked. It finally worked. Luna looked down at herself, dark cloth gone sheer and clinging, and something broke open in her. She had wanted this her whole life, to feel pretty instead of awkward. But she stood alone in a stranger's cave, whimpering, tears mixing with the rain. The one thing that worked, and no one was there to see it. "Hey. Hey, you're okay." Two women stood in the cave mouth. Luna froze and tried to cover herself. The blonde one came first, barefoot, her black crop top already damp from the steam. She held up both hands, soft and sure. "I'm Kara. We heard you crying from the bed. Please don't be scared." Behind her came a taller woman with wild red-and-black curls, freckles scattered down her bare arms, white lace clinging to her figure. This was her spring, her cave. Luna braced for anger. "This is my place," the woman said, and smiled instead. "I'm Tyra. Nobody cries alone in my cave." She stepped under the rain without flinching, lace going transparent, and didn't seem to mind one bit. "I ruin everything," Luna whispered. "I just needed to see if it worked. The way it looks wet. It's for a shop I want to open." Kara laughed, delighted, and pulled Tyra's arm. "Wait, these are yours? You made these?" She stepped into the water beside Luna, mesh and cotton turning sheer. "Show us. Make us wet too." Tyra tilted Luna's chin up. "Stop hiding. You found the only spring in Mistweald worth hiding in. That's not ruin. That's luck." Luna stood between them under the pouring rain, no longer alone. For the first time her dream had witnesses, and they were already asking for more. She had her water now. She had a private place. But as both women leaned close, dripping and curious, Luna realized her secret test had just become a very public show.
