Chapter 1

Luna Wolfhart reached the pack's border at dawn, ready to win the wolves' blessing so they would name her Kael's true mate. She had rehearsed her greeting for days. But the guards did not smile. They stared at her the way you stare at a thief. One spat at her feet. "So you're the human liar," he said. "We've heard all about you." Luna's stomach dropped. She had never met these wolves. Yet they already hated her. She learned the reason fast. A gray she-wolf in a leather jacket stood near the meeting hall, holding court. Luna Nightshade. Kael's ex-girlfriend. She wore a spiked collar and a small cruel smile. For weeks she had told the pack that Luna poisoned Kael's mind, that she scorned wolf ways, that she would betray them. The lies had spread before Luna set one foot on their land. Nightshade turned her amber eyes on Luna. "Come to charm them too?" she asked. "They already know what you are." A dozen wolves growled agreement. Luna felt the ground tilt. Words alone could not undo this. Nightshade's story was already in their bones. So Luna did the only thing left. She walked to the ancient seer's tent. Mora Wolfwhisper was the one voice the pack could not doubt. The old seer sat with her wolf-headed staff across her knees, beads clicking as she breathed. Her yellow eyes measured Luna without kindness. "They call me a liar," Luna said. "I want to prove my heart. Tell me how." Mora tapped her staff. "Words are cheap. Devotion is not." She pointed north, toward the black hills. "The First Alpha's Claw was lost in the flooded caves three winters past. No wolf will risk the water for it. Bring it home, and the pack will see your worth. Fail, and Nightshade wins." Luna went that same hour. The caves were cold and half-drowned. She squeezed through cracks and swam through black pools that stole her breath. Twice she nearly turned back. She thought of the guard's spit, of Nightshade's smile, and pushed on. Deep in the last chamber she found it. The great golden claw stood on its stone base, red and green stones glinting in the dark. She carried the relic back at dusk, soaked and shaking. The whole pack gathered outside the council lodge to watch. Luna set the First Alpha's Claw at Mora's feet. The seer touched it, then raised her staff high. "This human went where our own would not," Mora said. "Her devotion is real. The lies end now." The growls died. Wolves lowered their heads. The story Nightshade built cracked apart in a single moment. But Nightshade did not lower her head. She stepped forward, eyes blazing, and pointed at Luna. "A relic proves nothing," she snarled. "I challenge her. Blood decides a true mate. Fight me, or crawl home." The pack went silent. Luna had won their doubt. Now she had earned a duel.
