Chapter 3

Lunar plants the first row of Silver Needle White at dawn, her fingers pressed deep into the soil. The wounded fairy sleeps in the mushroom house behind her. The seeds go in one at a time, each hole the exact depth the label recommends. She's halfway through the second row when she hears wings. A fairy lands at the clearing's edge carrying a wooden platform. It's heavy — she drops it with a thud that shakes the moss. Rune markers glow along its edges, and crystal anchors jut from each corner like claim stakes. The fairy brushes dirt from her palms and walks straight to the gazebo. She sets a glass bottle on the steps, its contents glowing faint blue. Inside is a rolled letter sealed with wax. The fairy doesn't introduce herself. She points at the gazebo, then at the bioluminescent flowers. "This clearing was promised to me two seasons ago. I have the deed." She pulls a pedestal from her pack and sets it beside the bottle. Vines curl around its base, flowers already blooming from the stonework. A yellow orb rests on top, pulsing with steady light. "I brought tools. I brought proof. You need to leave." Lunar stands slowly, dirt still under her nails. She looks at the platform, the bottle, the pedestal with its glowing orb. All the markers of someone ready to stay. She thinks about running — the old pull is there, familiar as breathing. But the wounded fairy is behind her in the mushroom house, and the chest of seeds sits open beside the half-planted row. Lunar wipes her hands on her skirt. "Someone's garden burned. She brought the seeds here because this place felt safe." She picks up the glass bottle and reads the glowing letter inside. It's a promise, signed and dated. The clearing offered in exchange for building a gathering space. Lunar sets the bottle down carefully. "Your promise is real. But so is hers. And I'm not leaving until she wakes up and decides what to do with these seeds." The fairy stares at her for a long moment. Then she sits on the platform's edge and pulls out a waterskin. "Fine. We wait together." She doesn't smile, but she doesn't argue. Lunar returns to the second row and finishes planting. The other fairy watches, then starts unpacking tools from her bag — a trowel, stakes, twine. She doesn't ask permission. She just starts working on the far side of the clearing, setting boundary markers in a careful line. Two gardens taking shape in the same space, neither one backing down. Lunar presses the last seed into the ground and realizes she's made a choice without thinking about it. She stayed. She argued. She didn't run the moment someone challenged her claim. The clearing holds all three of them now — the wounded fairy, the one with the deed, and Lunar herself. When the wounded fairy wakes, someone will have to give something up. But for now, Lunar lets the other fairy work. They plant in silence as the sun rises higher, two gardeners sharing contested ground.
