Chapter 1

Lunara Petalwind pressed her thumb to a closed rosebud and waited for it to open. Once, her touch could wake every flower in the woods overnight. That was the magic behind the spring festival she meant to bring back. But this morning her light was almost gone. A weak spark crossed her fingertips and died. The bud stayed shut. She tried again on a marigold, then a violet. Nothing. Her wings drooped. Last spring she had failed to hold the festival, and the woods had gone quiet ever since. She could not fail a second year. So she flew to the one place where things still grew on purpose. The community herb garden sat calm and tidy in the morning light. Neat beds held basil, thyme, and sage. Dried bundles hung from a wooden roof. Someone had watered the paths. The plants here were healthy without her magic at all. Lunara landed on a raised bed and studied them. If her power was fading, maybe she could learn how these plants thrived on soil and care instead. A rustle came from behind a barrel. A skunk stepped out, sleek and black-striped, with wide butterfly wings folded across its back. The wings shimmered blue and purple as it moved. It carried a fallen seed in its mouth and dropped it into an empty pot. Lunara went still. "You planted that," she said. The skunk looked at her, then nosed dirt over the seed. It worked slowly, deliberately, the way a gardener would. She watched it press the soil flat. An idea sparked. Her magic was too weak to force a bloom. But maybe she did not need to force one. She knelt beside the skunk and touched the newly buried seed. Instead of pushing hard, she let her flicker of light seep down slow, like water. Nothing happened for a long moment. Then a thin green shoot broke the surface. It rose, unfolded, and opened into a single white flower. The skunk's wings fluttered. Lunara laughed out loud. Her old magic had blazed. This new one crept. But it worked. She could grow flowers again, one seed at a time, with patience and dirt and this odd winged helper beside her. Then she looked past the garden beds to the silent woods beyond. One flower had taken her whole morning. The festival needed every flower in the forest to bloom in a single night. At this speed, she would need years. Lunara stared at the lone white bloom in her hands. Her magic was back, but far too slow. She had solved one problem and uncovered a bigger one. She needed a way to make many seeds grow at once. And she had no idea where to find that many seeds.
