Chapter 1

Lunaria set the hammer down and turned toward the door before she heard the footsteps. Her wings flickered, responding to something she couldn't name — a pull in the air, a shift in temperature, a sense that the night had just reshaped itself around a single presence. She had learned to trust metal because it never lied, but this feeling in her chest was older than any forge lesson. Someone was coming. Someone who might finally ask the right question. He appeared at the edge of the stone pillars, where the vines caught the firelight. Tall. Storm-dark eyes that found hers immediately, like he'd been searching for this exact forge, this exact night. Aldric Stormweaver didn't introduce himself — he simply stood there, watching her with an intensity that made her fairy senses flare hot and bright. The fire between them danced orange and blue, throwing shadows that couldn't hide the recognition in his face. He looked at her wings, her soot-stained hands, the sword leaning against the anvil, and he didn't flinch. He saw all of it. And for the first time in years, Lunaria felt the space she'd been saving at the forge fill with a presence that matched its shape exactly. She reached for the tongs without thinking, needing something solid to ground her. Her fingers found the worn wooden handle, ash-covered tips still warm from the last piece she'd worked. But her hand trembled. The metal she trusted had no answer for this. Aldric stepped closer, his boots quiet on the stone, and asked the question no one else ever had: "Why are you still here tonight?" The tongs slipped from her grip. She didn't catch them. For once, she didn't need to hold onto anything at all. He caught them mid-fall. His hand closed around the iron, steady and sure, and he set them down on the anvil beside her. Not in the spot she always used. Not where she'd been unconsciously saving space for someone who never came back. Somewhere new. Then he pulled a copper pendant from his pocket and placed it next to the tongs. Storm symbols covered its surface, worn smooth from years of handling. "I've been looking for you," he said. The words hit her chest like a hammer strike. Clean. True. She didn't look away. Didn't make excuses. Didn't wonder if she'd misread the moment. Her wings spread wide, catching the firelight, and she finally answered the question he'd asked. "Because I was waiting for you."
