Chapter 65

Monday morning Lymber put on a blazer she had not worn in ten years. It still fit through the shoulders. She stood in the mirror and pinned her hair back. Paul poured coffee downstairs and told her the twins were dressed. Violetta walked past her door and stopped. She said, you look like a person on TV. Lymber said, I feel like a person on a diving board. Violetta said, jump. Lymber grabbed her bag and drove downtown. The tech tower rose in glass off the main road, six floors of light. She parked, tipped her chin up, and walked through the front doors of Vertex Prime HQ. The front desk printed her badge. A woman from her team met her at the elevator and said, welcome, we have you at a desk on four. Lymber said thank you and did not correct her voice when it shook. Her desk faced the window. She had a laptop, a notebook, and a stack of onboarding pages. The manager sat with her for an hour and walked through the first project. It was a coordinator role, part time, three days a week. She could do it. She wrote notes in tight letters like she used to write essays. At lunch she ate a salad at her desk and texted Paul a picture of the view. He wrote back, proud of you Mrs. Craft. At three she closed the laptop, signed out, and drove home. Violetta was at the table with her homework. Missy and Max were on the rug with the puppy. Jett was reading on the couch. Lymber set her bag down and said, I did it. Violetta looked up. She said, was it hard. Lymber said, it was fine. She said, it was actually fine. She sat and pulled the twins' worksheets toward her. Then her phone buzzed on the counter. It was the manager. The email said the team was moving the coordinator role to five days a week starting in two weeks, and asked if she could confirm by Friday. Lymber read it twice. She looked at the four children in the room and set the phone face down on the table.
