Chapter 1

Lyra held the chunk of frost-steel ore over her coals and watched it stay blue and cold. She had built this fire three times today. Each time it died against the ore. The blue markings on her hands glowed faintly, the same runes that ran across her cheeks. Those marks were her promise. They meant she alone could forge the sacred blade, a weapon no hand but hers could ever wield. But a promise meant nothing if her ore stayed hard as river ice. She pressed her palm to the ore. Still freezing. Her own fire was not even close. She needed a heat that did not exist in any forge she knew. The thought pushed her toward the one place she had avoided. The tower of carved ice stood pale against the storm. Crystal spires crowned it. Frosted runes glowed along its stone. Lyra climbed the steps with the ore wrapped in fur against her chest and knocked. The door opened on its own. Inside, a woman stood turning a sprig of crystal flowers in her fingers, not looking up. Her gown ran from deep blue to pale. White braids fell around her face. This was Selene, the ice goddess who could pull frost from flesh and from stone. Lyra had heard she gave gifts to those who carried the marks. She had also heard the goddess gave nothing twice. "You brought cold steel to a house of cold," Selene said. She finally looked up. Her eyes moved to Lyra's glowing hands. "And marks like these. You want to make a blade." "My fire cannot touch it," Lyra said. "No forge burns hot enough." Selene set down the flowers. "No forge of coal will. Frost-steel does not answer to ordinary heat. It answers to living fire." She walked to a tall window and opened it to the storm. Then she raised two fingers and whistled once, low. Something answered from the white sky. A shape dropped past the window and landed on the sill. A dragon, blue and scaled, dark runes burning across its wings. Heat rolled off it like an open door in winter. Lyra stepped back from the warmth alone. "Its breath is the only forge that will shape your ore," Selene said. "I will not command it for you. If it decides you are worthy of the marks you wear, it will burn for you. If not, it will burn you." Lyra unwrapped the ore and held it out toward the dragon. The creature lowered its head. Its runes flared. A jet of blue fire poured over the ore, and for the first time the steel went soft and bright in her hands. The heat held only seconds. Then the dragon folded its wings and settled on the floor, watching her. It did not leave. "It has chosen," Selene said. "But it will not stay chained to this tower. If you want its fire, you must take the dragon with you."
