Chapter 1

Lyra Jinwood had hanged nine witches, and the tenth was chained to her wrist by a cord she could not cut. The red cord glowed between them, thin as a thread, strong as iron. She had spent three days sawing at it with a silvered blade. The blade dulled. The cord did not. She was a witch hunter in a long leather coat, and her prisoner was the sorceress she had been paid to kill. Now she could not walk ten steps without dragging the woman behind her. They sheltered in a broken chapel with a caved roof and shattered windows. Rain dripped through the timbers. Lyra needed to know how the cord worked. The sorceress alone knew. And the sorceress would not speak. "You'll cut my throat the moment it snaps," the sorceress said. She sat against a cracked pillar, wrists thin from the chafing thread. "Why should I hand you the knife?" Lyra had no answer she believed herself. A hunter's word was worth nothing to the hunted. So she brought in a witness. The masked merchant had parked his cart outside the chapel that same wet night, selling charms to no one. Kael Fenrow wore a velvet half-mask and a hood that swallowed his face. When Lyra called him in, he came without a sound, his voice like honey over gravel. "You want a vow bound," he said. It was not a question. "That is dangerous work. Vows have teeth." Lyra set her silver blade on the cold stone floor. Then she took the crimson warning rune from her coat, the one hunters used to mark a witch for death. She held it out to the sorceress. "This rune names you for the gallows," Lyra said. "Every hunter reads it. Without it, no bounty holds. Take it. Keep it. If I break my word, you burn it, and my claim on your life dies with it." The sorceress stared at the glowing rune. "You'd give up the bounty. The whole reason you hunt me." "I want the cord gone," Lyra said. "Not you dead. Those stopped being the same thing three days ago." Kael lifted one gloved hand. A dark light gathered at his fingers. "Speak it plainly, hunter. I will bind what you say." "I swear I won't hang you," Lyra said. "Help me sever the cord, and you walk free." The merchant's magic closed over the words like a fist. The rune passed from Lyra's palm to the sorceress's. Its red glow crawled up the woman's arm, then settled, quiet. The sorceress breathed out. "Then hear this. The cord isn't a chain. It's a debt. It won't break by cutting. It breaks when one of us pays what the other is owed." Lyra's hand went cold. She had sworn away the gallows to learn the cure. Now the cure asked a price she did not yet understand, and the sorceress held the rune that could still hang her.
