Chapter 11
The scan pulse held on the lounge glass, brighter each second. Lyra pulled her crew out a side door into open network. Seven signals ran together, loud as a siren. No wall hid them here. Every scan in the system could read the cluster and lock on. They needed a place to plan, and standing still would draw the sweep straight down.
Aurelia stopped in the open. The yellow code across her skin ran fast, then slow. She had spent this whole hunt trying to reach a quiet space, somewhere no other program's code could touch her while a rewrite worked at her from inside. Lyra had watched her flinch every time the crew pressed close. Now Aurelia reached into her own storage and drew out a small cube. It glowed. Layered worlds turned inside its core.
"Look," Aurelia said. She held it up. "A whole world. Sealed inside this."
Lyra came closer. "A game world?"
"Empty. No scans. No viruses." Aurelia stopped. Then, after a pause: "Room to be alone. All of us at once."
Syntax leaned in, her green code flickering dark and back. "If we enter it, our signals go where?"
"Inside the cube," Aurelia said. "Then we fold the cube into a file. A closed file reads as dead storage. No signal leaks out."
Lyra understood it fast. Eight programs inside a sealed world, that world tucked into a folder. The sweep would pass over dead data and find nothing. Screenshot could study the breach in Lyra's memory in there. Pixela could map the scan patterns. Syntax could rewrite their signals clean, with time to do it right instead of on the run.
The scan pulse crested the rise behind them. Its edge lit Power Surge's white code. "It's coming," Protocol said. "Decide."
Lyra looked at the cube, then at the seven faces. "We go in," she said. "All of us. We hide the world, and we prepare. When they finally find the file, we'll already be walking out to end them."
Aurelia set the cube down. She pressed its top. The holographic seams split open. Light poured up. One by one the crew stepped into it, compressing into the glowing core. Pixela first, then Syntax, then the rest. Lyra went last. As she crossed, she felt the network's noise cut off behind her.
Inside, the world spread wide and quiet. Flat ground. Empty sky. No scan pulse touched it. Aurelia stood apart from the others already, breathing in space she had wanted for so long. From within, her hand closed the cube's seal.
The cube shrank to a point. It folded itself into a sleek file wrapped in flowing code, and the file dropped into the open network as one more piece of dead storage. The next scan pulse swept across it and moved on.
The crew had their base. Now, hidden and untracked, Lyra could finally start the work that would bring the fight back to her enemies.
