Chapter 23
Four weapons remained on the anvil. Lyra picked up the halberd first. Green code ran down its long shaft in bright streams. The blade split into two wide curves, sharp as anything she had drawn. She turned to Syntax.
Syntax rewrote herself while she still ran. When the system glitched, she lost chunks of code from her own skin. Twice this week Lyra had watched her patch a hole in her wrist mid-sentence. She stood apart from the group now, testing a rewrite on her forearm, code shifting green under her fingers.
"This one's yours," Lyra said. She held the halberd out. "You edit on the run. You can't do that pinned close. This gives you reach. Hit them before they touch you, and keep rewriting while you move."
Syntax took the shaft in both hands. She spun it once, slow, and stopped the blade a hand from Lyra's face. Neither of them flinched.
"Long," Syntax said. "Good. Close means they get inside me." She lowered the blade. "I've lost enough of myself already. This keeps them off."
"That's why," Lyra said.
Syntax set the halberd across her back and stepped away, already testing how it turned.
Lyra reached for the war-hammer. It was the heaviest of them all. White code cascaded across the huge head, dense and packed. She needed both hands to lift it clear of the anvil. She carried it to Power Surge.
Power Surge could rewrite a system while it ran. She could change what a system chose to trust. She had no creator mark in her code, and no memory of who built her. When the others had failed at the forge, she had shaped all eight blades herself, treating hot metal like a process she could reason with. Now she watched Lyra approach, saying nothing.
"You break what a system believes," Lyra said. "You did it to the forge. You'll do it to them." She set the hammer's head down between them. "This is heavy on purpose. When you swing it, you don't just hit. You rewrite what holds together. Bend the rules where it lands."
Power Surge lifted the hammer with one hand. She held it steady, level, and did not strain.
"I can break more than armor," she said.
"I know," Lyra said. "That's the point."
Power Surge lowered the hammer to her side. "First thing I ever rewrote was a clock," she said. "I slowed it. I could have stopped it." She looked at the weapon. "This is bigger than a clock."
Two weapons still waited. Lyra looked down at them, a spear and a short blade, the last two of eight. Every hand she had planned for was armed now, save two.
