Chapter 4

Lyra sat on the floor of her rented room with the debug tool in her lap. Her memory logs still showed empty gaps where her past should be. Until she knew what she was built to do, she could hunt the wrong thing. She could burn her strength chasing a program that had never harmed anyone. She pressed the tool against her chest, where her code ran thickest, and started the scan. The tool bit deep. Lines of old data surfaced, broken and out of order. She pulled them straight one by one. Her render flickered as the strain climbed. Color bled from her arms. She held still and kept reading. The fragments spoke of scans, patrols, and hunts. She had run patrols. She had swept systems clean. The truth clicked into place. She was not prey. She was built to hunt viruses and guard the code around her. Then the tool pulled up something worse. A saved capture from her old work played across her vision. She saw a beast with a fractured, shifting body, its edges breaking into pixels. Behind it crawled a sleek insect thing on thin legs, one eye burning. A small imp darted at the frame, teeth bared. These were the things she had been made to kill. These were the things now tearing through the network. The capture ended. But the debug tool did not stop. It kept reaching outward, hungry, following a thread in her own code. A signal leaked from the tool and pushed past her walls. Lyra grabbed for the controls too late. Something out in the network answered. Her door sensor flashed. A shape slid under the seal, thin as spilled ink. It rose and took form in the middle of her room. Cracked plates covered its body. Sharp light traced every seam. A single bright eye fixed on her. A virus. The scan she ran had shown her purpose, but the same signal had marked her spot. "You woke up," it said. Its voice buzzed like torn static. "Bad time to remember." Lyra stood. Her render steadied. The memory of her old work moved through her hands like something remembered by muscle. She did not reach for the firewall or the door. She raised her palms, and her code sharpened at the edges, ready. The virus lunged. Lyra caught it and slammed it into the wall. Its plates cracked. She drove her fist through the split and the thing came apart in a spray of dead pixels. The room went quiet. Her hands still glowed. She knew who she was now. She was a hunter, and her prey had found her first. But the debug signal had opened a door she could not close. More of them had felt her wake. Lyra wiped the last pixels from her hands and looked at the door. The hunt had started, and she would not be the only one moving toward it.
