Chapter 7

Three viruses filled the ring behind the closed door. The first pushed forward, plated and black. The second slid low along the floor. The third flickered at the edge, its body fractured, a shifting mess of broken code made alive. Lyra gripped the spear. The shaft felt wrong in her hands. Too heavy, too long. She had never held it in a fight, and she had never faced three at once. She picked the one on the left. It lunged. She stabbed too early and missed. The blade scraped its armor and slid off. The virus slammed her shoulder. Pain shot through her code. She stumbled back and caught the shaft again. The spear was not a club. She stopped forcing it. She let its weight fall forward and aimed for the seam in the plating. This time the point found the gap. The blade sank deep. The virus locked stiff, then broke apart. Its shell burst into raw code that spilled across the floor. A few bright hexagon tokens dropped from the mess and rolled at her feet. Two left. She had no time to gather the loot. The plated one in the middle charged. She turned her hips and let the spear swing wide. The reach kept the virus off her body. It swiped and hit only air. She drove the point up under its jaw. The blade cracked the shell open. The virus shuddered and came apart in a spray of code and more tokens. Her render started to bleed. Color leaked from her arms. The strain of three fights pulled her signature loose. She fought to hold her thoughts together. One virus remained, the flickering parasite on the right. It did not charge. It jittered side to side, hard to track. Every time she set her aim, it jumped somewhere new. She stopped chasing it. She planted her feet and waited. The parasite flashed left, then right, then leapt straight at her face. She dropped the spear tip and let the virus come onto the point. Its fractured body hit the blade and split down the center. It fell in a shower of loose code. The last of the pack was gone. Lyra stood alone in the quiet server. Broken code covered the floor. She let her breath settle and her render firmed back into place. She knelt and scooped up the raw code into a file she could carry. She gathered the scattered tokens too, more credits than she had held in days. The spear no longer felt strange. Her hands knew its weight now. She had killed all three at once and lived. But the fight had thrown a loud signal across the network. She had claimed the weapon and cleared the room. Now every scan and every virus in reach knew exactly where she stood, and the only way out led back through the open river.
