Chapter 1

Lyra Nightbloom pressed her pendant to the dying creature in her arms and begged her vines to grow. The sapphire hummed, faint as a tired heartbeat. Pale vines crept from her fingers, curled into a loose roof, then sagged and fell apart. The creature in her lap was a small blue hound with a dragon's scaled tail and folded wings. Its sides heaved. Behind her, more animals waited at the treeline, driven from their homes by the blight that turned forests to gray ash. Lyra wanted to build them a garden sanctuary, a living shelter where every fleeing creature could be safe. Tonight her magic could not even cover one. "You're squeezing the stone like a fist," said a voice. "Power isn't bread. You can't wring it out." Lyra turned. An old woman stood among the broken vines, barely taller than a child, silver hair threaded with green leaves. Living vines curled through her robe and moved as she breathed. This was Thorna Rootwhisper, the elder vine witch. Lyra had searched three ruined valleys to find her. Everyone said Thorna had sheltered creatures long before the blight, that she alone knew how to wake a sleeping stone. Thorna knelt and touched the hound's trembling flank. "Pretty pendant. Loud for its size. But you only pull from the top, child. The top runs dry." She tapped Lyra's wrist. "The deep well frightens you." "It hurts," Lyra admitted. "When I reach lower, it feels like it will take more than I have." "It takes exactly that much." Thorna's green eyes did not soften. "You give the stone your fear, your hope, the grief you carry for these poor beasts. Not a drop held back. Then it grows something worth sheltering under. Or you keep your comfortable little vines, and this one dies in your arms." The hound's breathing slowed. Lyra felt its weight settle, too still. She shut her eyes and stopped guarding herself. She poured in the ash-choked forests, the animals she had already failed, her want to be their queen and keeper. The pendant blazed. The hum became a roar she felt in her teeth. Pain shot up her arms. Vines erupted from the ground. They were thick as her waist, dark and strong, crusted with leaves that threw off soft blue light. They wove overhead into a true roof, then walls, then a wide dome that enclosed the whole treeline. The waiting creatures surged inside. Warmth gathered under the living shelter. The hound stirred, blinked, and licked her hand. Lyra laughed, then swayed. The roar had emptied her. Her knees buckled, and Thorna caught her shoulder. "Now you know the price," the old witch said. "But look." She pointed past the new shelter. Where Lyra's power had surged, the soil had cracked open, and a thin gray vein of blight crawled toward them through the ground, drawn like a moth to the light. "Your strength called it here, child. Rest tonight. Tomorrow we fight to keep what you grew."
