Chapter 1

Lyra Stellwyn had sworn never to touch a Severance creature again, and now one was bleeding on her kitchen floor. It had followed her home from the ridge, three-legged and silent, leaving a trail of light blue drops across the tile. She knew what it was the moment she saw the fronds fanning from its skull, the dotted glow along its flank pulsing weak and slow. A lab escape. One of theirs. The kind of animal her grandmother had spent forty years cataloguing before the Severance took her too, along with the last guardian egg of their people and every promise made over it. Lyra crouched by the fox and counted the wounds. Four punctures under the ribs. A torn shoulder. A burn along the jaw that no ordinary snare made. She had a veterinary kit for goats and a stolen field manual with half its pages missing. Nothing in either covered an animal whose blood glowed. She worked until the window turned gray. She flushed the punctures with saline and packed them with the clotting powder meant for her neighbor's ewes. When the shoulder kept leaking, she pressed the glowing fronds against the wound on a hunch and watched the bleeding slow. The creature did not bite her. It watched her hands the way a child watches a stranger. By the time the sun cleared the ridge, its breathing had steadied and the light along its flank held a color she could almost call steady. Lyra sat back against the cabinet and understood two things at once. She had kept it alive, which meant the lab would come looking. And she could not send it back. She reached for her grandmother's ledger on the shelf above the sink, opened to the first blank page, and wrote the date, the wounds, and one word beneath them: first. Somewhere in the same building where this fox had been cut, the guardian egg was still waiting. She had a patient now. She would need a place to keep the next ones.
