Chapter 1

Lyra Willowshade pressed her palm to a dying mushroom and felt the whole grove's pain. She was fifteen, raised under giant blue caps that leaned like a roof of shells above her. Most children in her village heard wind and water. Lyra heard the magic underneath them. Right now that magic screamed. Half the towering mushrooms had gone gray, their stems soft as wet bread. If the grove died, her home died with it. And she wanted to leave this grove more than anything, to walk beyond the trees and see the far lands she only knew from stories. But she could not leave a sick home behind. She closed her eyes and reached into the roots with her gift. The sickness felt like a knot pulled too tight underground. She pushed her magic down to loosen it. The gray spread faster instead. A cap the size of a wagon cracked and dropped chunks near her feet. Lyra stumbled back, heart slamming. Her power had made it worse. "Stop pouring water on a grease fire, child." The voice belonged to her teacher, the old wizard in green robes who had trained her since she could walk. His white beard caught bits of falling spore-dust. He leaned on nothing, arms crossed, watching her fail. He had never once done the work for her. "I felt the knot," Lyra said. "I tried to loosen it." "You felt the wound. Not the cause." He nodded toward the shadows between the stems. "Look with your gift, not your hands." Lyra breathed slow and let her magic drift instead of shove. Then she saw it. A bright blue dragonfly hovered near a healthy cap, sleek as a tiny dragon, its wings thin as glass. Where it landed, the mushroom stayed strong. Where it had not visited, the rot crawled. The creature carried something the grove needed. And there was only one of it. "They came in clouds once," the wizard said quietly. "Now one remains. The grove is starving for what they carry." Lyra held out her hand. She did not grab. She sent a thread of calm magic, the way she calmed frightened rabbits. The dragonfly circled twice, then settled on her finger. Its tiny claws gripped her skin. Through her gift she felt where it wanted to go, somewhere far, somewhere the rest of its kind still lived. "It can't heal this alone," she said. "There are more. Beyond the forest." The old wizard finally smiled. "Then the grove's cure is not here. It never was." Lyra looked at the gray spreading behind her and the small blue creature on her hand. To save her home, she had to leave it. The one thing she wanted and the one thing she feared had become the same thing. She curled her fingers gently around the dragonfly and turned toward the edge of the trees. "Show me," she whispered. And it lifted, pulling her forward into the wider world.
