Chapter 15
The final trial had not begun when the doors slammed open. The corrupt judge strode down the aisle of the courthouse, silver moon clasp bright on his wrist. He was early. Lyria stood in the middle of the floor, harp on her hip, wolf pressed to her leg. Below, beneath the stone, waited the sealed thing. The judge's eyes went to the ring carved in the floor. He was coming for it.
"Adrian, now," Lyria said. Adrian moved to block the bench, planting himself between the judge and the empty seats. The judge did not slow. He raised one hand and spoke a word Lyria did not know. Under her boots, the stone shuddered. A crack of light split the floor and ran toward the carved ring. He was breaking the seal.
Lyria ran. The wolf howled and bolted the other way, terror driving it toward the doors. She did not follow. She reached the ring and stepped inside its glowing line. Heat rose through her feet. Far below, she felt something wake, an old pressure like a held breath.
Selenya appeared at the ring's edge, purple eyes wide. "Your soul is flickering," she said, flat and fast. "Gray at the edges. Hold it there."
"That's the plan," Lyria said. She let the doubt come. Every fear she carried, that she did not belong, that she had never earned her place, that the Wardens saw through her. She did not fight it. She fed it into the ring.
The seal was drinking her uncertainty. The light in the crack dimmed. Below, the pressure sank back. Malgoros's voice reached her, dry through the stone. "You are unsure. Good. The others were not."
The judge screamed and struck the ring with his fist. The line flared but held. He struck again. Lyria felt the seal pull harder on her, hungry for more doubt, and she gave it freely. The crack in the floor sealed shut. Malgoros stayed chained.
The judge turned to run. Adrian was already there. He drove his shoulder into the man and pinned him to the stone. Guards poured in from the doors. They dragged the judge up, clasp and all. It was over.
Lyria stayed in the ring, shaking. Selenya offered a hand and pulled her out. The floor was quiet. The wolf crept back and leaned against her.
"You held it," Adrian said. He was breathing hard. "With the thing you hate most about yourself."
"Turns out doubt is worth something," Lyria said. Her legs felt like water.
Selenya's eyes narrowed. "The gray soul I tracked. It was not the judge alone." She looked at the sealed floor. "Something down there answered him. It knows you now."
Lyria looked at the ring. She had stopped the judge. But she had stood face to face with Malgoros and let it taste her weakness. The creature had felt her doubt, learned its shape. And now it knew exactly how she could be broken.
