Chapter 1

Six months ago, Lyrien Dew watched the mawwing owl carry his mother into the dark, and he ran. He has hunted the owl ever since. Now he stood over a cold trail again, one week too old, and he knew the truth he kept from the others. When the owl came for him, he would freeze. He had frozen once. His legs had known it before his mind did. Skill alone would not fix that. So the group went looking for the scholar. People on the docks said she feared no beast. They said she had cut open things that had killed other researchers. Lyrien needed that. Not a sword. Someone who had faced the owl and lived to write it down. They found her hut at the edge of the marsh. Miren Caldwell did not look up when they entered. She sat over a sheet of parchment wider than a table, her gloves scarred by claws, a bone quill pinned in her hair. She was drawing a wing. A real one, feather by feather. "You hunt the mawwing owl," she said. Not a question. Her fingers were black with ink. "Two people I knew studied it. Both are dead. Sit or leave." Pippa did not sit. She pushed to the front, ears up, tail sweeping the floor. "You've seen it? Up close? What does it do first?" Her words came fast and clipped. "I burned my hand on a fire spell once. Cast it again the next day. I don't scare easy either." Miren studied her, then Lyrien. "It hunts at dusk. It waits above and drops silent. The first thing it does is nothing." She tapped the parchment. "It holds still and stares. People stop moving. They lock up. Then it takes them." Lyrien's mouth went dry. That was it. That was the moment on the hill. Not the owl's speed. Its stare had pinned him. "You freeze because it wants you to," Miren said. She looked straight at him now. "It's not fear. It's the eyes. Break the stare and you keep your legs." Cole spoke from the doorway, quiet. "How do you break it?" Miren pulled a fresh sheet toward her and began drawing the head. "Don't meet the eyes. Watch the feet. It tenses before it drops." She slid the sketch across to Lyrien. "Come. I've hunted it twice from cover. I'll show you where it nests and how it moves. But we go on my terms." Lyrien took the sketch. His hands were steady. For the first time in six months, the thing that beat him had a name he could fight. He had not frozen from weakness. The owl had done it to him on purpose, and now he knew how to stop it. Miren stood and shouldered her huge pack. "Its nest is a day north. It will hunt again at the next dusk. We leave now, or we lose it for another week."
