Chapter 1

Lysander Heartsworn had seduced dukes and generals for their secrets, but he could not read the royal heir at all. Tonight he was supposed to. His old handlers had sent him to this mushroom planet with one order: win the heir's heart, drain the kingdom's secrets. Instead the king had adopted him as a lost wanderer, and now Lysander loved the disguise more than the mission. He still could not stop working it. He watched the heir push food around a plate across the great hall and understood nothing about them. He tried a compliment about the heir's fine cloak. The heir's face closed like a shutter. He tried a joke about the castle's endless fungal halls. Colder still. Every guess landed wrong. Lysander had built a career on knowing what people wanted. Here he was blind, and blindness would push the heir away for good. He found Vela behind the kitchens, feeding a scaled cat scraps from her palm. Vela was the other outsider at this table, the alien spy who had once shown Lysander her hidden talking rocket. That secret bound them. She could ruin him. He could ruin her. So they told each other the truth. "I can't reach the heir," Lysander said. "I flatter them and they shrink from me." Vela did not look up from the cat. "Because you flatter. They hate it." "Then what do they love?" "Watch, don't charm." She nodded toward a shadowed doorway. "The heir slips out most nights. Follow. Say nothing." Lysander followed. The heir crossed the east yard alone and knelt by the old rocket the king thought no one visited. But the heir went past it, to a patch of glowing spores where a three-eyed creature lay curled and hurt. Its cosmic fur dimmed. The heir gathered it up and pressed it to their chest, whispering, hiding tears from anyone who might see. Lysander understood at last. The heir did not want flattery or fine words. They wanted something small to protect. They were lonely in a hall full of harmony, and they hid it hard. He stepped from the shadows. He did not smile his practiced smile. "It's shivering," he said. "It needs warmth, not the cold ground." He knelt and pulled off his coat, and together they wrapped the creature. The heir stared at him, wary, then surprised. For the first time, their face opened. "You didn't run to tell my father," they said. "No," Lysander said. And he meant it, which frightened him. Something turned that night. Lysander finally knew what the heir cared about. But he had learned it by kneeling in the king's secret yard, and the heir now trusted a spy who came here to betray them. To win the heart he was sent to win, he would have to become the honest man he pretended to be, or lose everything the moment they learned the truth.
