Chapter 2

The scratching started at moonrise. Maddie was at the kitchen table, her burned palm wrapped in a strip of clean linen, the golden vessel set between the sugar tin and a jar of dried marigold. Tank lifted his head off the rug. His ears twitched once. Then the sound came again — a slow drag along the outside wall, low, near the floorboards. "That's not a branch," Tank said. "I know it's not a branch." Maddie stood. The vessel pulsed once, warm as a held breath. She had set wards around the cottage a year ago — salt at the sills, iron nails at the corners, a chalk line under the threshold. She had done it the way the books said. She had never tested them against anything real. The scratching moved. It went along the east wall, past the window, and stopped at the door. Something pressed against the wood. The chalk line under the threshold began to smoke. "Maddie." Tank's voice was flat. "Now." She grabbed the vessel. The blister on her palm split against the metal and she hissed, but she held on. She had one spell she knew by heart and it was not a shield. It was the six-word chant that had filled the bottle. She did not have a shield. She had never needed one. The door bowed inward. A seam of dark light bled through the gap. Then a fist hit the door from the outside — human, solid, three sharp knocks — and a voice said, "Open it." Maddie knew the voice. She had known it since she was small, though she had not heard it in a year. Her mentor. The one who came and went from the woods without warning and answered half of what she asked. She unbolted the door. Credence stood on the porch in a torn shirt, boots muddy, mint-green hair flat with sweat. Behind them, the flower beds were bent flat in a wide ring, as if something huge had circled the cottage and gone. They stepped inside, shut the door, and put one hand on the smoking chalk. The smoke stopped. "Your wards are paper," Credence said. "They held." "I held." They looked at the vessel in her hand. "It can smell that. It will come back." "What is it?" "Something you woke." Credence crossed to the window and drew the curtain. "You can't stay here." "This is my house." "It's a box with a light in it now." They turned. Their eyes were tired. "Pack a bag. Bring the dog. Bring the bottle. We leave at dawn." Maddie looked at Tank. Tank looked at the door. The scratching did not start again. Outside, the bent flowers stayed bent. She went to get her bag.
