Maddix refilled the fourth cup without looking, his hand already reaching for the pot before the last guest had finished speaking. The party had been running for three days straight now, maybe four — he'd stopped counting when the count stopped mattering. What mattered was the noise. The table had outgrown the clearing years ago. Now it wound through rooms that hadn't existed when the party started, curving past staircases and balconies, disappearing through archways only to emerge on terraces above. The mansion had built itself around the conversation, stone and timber rising wherever the table needed to go next. Teacups stacked in towers along the edges. A massive mushroom had sprouted through the floorboards near the south wing, its cap pushing up between platters of sandwiches that no one remembered setting out. Maddix kept the pot moving, kept the cups full, kept his attention on the rhythm of voices rising and falling like breath. Then Alice Liddell sat down at the far end and placed a wooden box on the table. She didn't pour. Didn't reach for anything. Just sat there with her hands folded over the box while the conversation thinned around her like water draining from a basin. Maddix felt it immediately — the dead moment creeping in, cold and familiar. He trusted it would shift. It always did. But Alice kept her hands on that box, and her silence spread down the table like frost. "I won't drink," she said, "until you answer something." Her voice cut through the last threads of conversation. "Why did you start this?" The question hung there, plain and impossible. Maddix's hand stopped halfway to the pot. He'd never let himself ask that. Never looked back to find a beginning because beginnings were just the place where endings got planted. But Alice waited, and the party had gone completely still, and for the first time in longer than he could measure, Maddix didn't trust the silence to shift on its own.
