Chapter 1

Six days before opening, Madison Blake stood alone on her stage and realized she had built a scandal with no one to perform it. The club smelled of fresh paint and stale coffee. Rows of empty velvet chairs stared back at her. The marquee out front already glowed pink and gold, promising Crackleflat the filthiest show it had ever gossiped about. She had the building, the liquor license, the whispered guest list. She had no headliner. Madison hopped off the stage and yanked her audition clipboard from the bar. Twelve names. Twelve disasters. One woman had cried during her own song. Another had shown up drunk and demanded a pyrotechnics budget. Madison was short, blonde, and built like a dare, and she could sell a room by walking through it — but she couldn't sell it and run it. Not both. Not on opening night. The front doors banged open. Victoria Sterling walked in like she owned the mortgage, which, technically, half of it she did. Her yellow suit caught every stage light in the room. Gold hoops swung at her jaw. "Tell me you found someone," Madison said. "I found someone." Victoria dropped a business card on the bar. "She's outside. She's expensive. Be nice." "I'm always nice." "You're never nice. Be nice anyway." The woman who came through the door next did not wait to be introduced. She walked down the center aisle in fishnets and heels, tossed a feathered hat onto a chair, and climbed onto Madison's stage without asking. "Play something," she said. "Anything slow." Madison nodded at the sound booth. A brass line crawled out of the speakers. The redhead moved like she had rehearsed inside that exact song her whole life. She unhooked one glove. Then the other. She didn't strip. She threatened to. The empty room felt suddenly full. When the music cut, she was still smiling, still breathing easy. "Scarlett Divine," she said. "I take Fridays off and I don't share a dressing room. Do we have a problem?" Madison looked at Victoria. Victoria was already writing a number on a napkin. She slid it across the bar. Scarlett glanced down, laughed once, and picked up a pen. "Double it for opening week," Scarlett said, "and I'll make your city forget its own name." Madison's jaw tightened. Double would gut her cushion. Double would leave nothing if ticket sales stalled. She thought about the twelve names on the clipboard. She thought about a full house and no one to fill the stage. "Done," Madison said, and shook her hand. Scarlett signed the napkin like it was a contract and walked out for her bags. Victoria waited until the door shut. "You just spent the emergency fund." "I bought a headliner." "You bought a headliner," Victoria said. "Now we have six days and no margin for anything else going wrong." Madison stared at the empty chairs. Something was going to go wrong. It always did.
