Chapter 1

Madness woke to the smell of burnt wood and magic gone wrong. She lay still in the dark, listening. The tower room was silent except for her breathing. Something felt different. Changed. She pushed herself upright and reached for the lamp beside her bed. The flame caught, throwing shadows across the stone walls. Then she saw it. Words carved deep into her door. Raw gouges in the oak, still smoking at the edges. THEY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE. Her jaw tightened as she crossed the room, bare feet cold against stone. She traced one letter with her finger. The cuts were fresh, done while she slept. Outside her window, dawn was breaking over the valley. She looked down and spotted the bones immediately. A skeleton sprawled at the base of her tower, arranged deliberately. The skull faced upward, empty sockets staring straight at her window. Someone had been watching. Someone had proof of her practice sessions with the unnamed magic. The guardian's test had just become far more complicated. Madness pressed her palm against the carved warning until her hand went numb. She had two choices. Stop her work and survive in the shadows, or accelerate everything before whoever left this message could act. The bones below told her the watcher had been there for days, maybe weeks. They had seen enough to condemn her. She pulled on her robes and began gathering her tools. The guardian would have to yield today, or she would force the issue. No more waiting. No more tests. If her secret was already exposed, she had nothing left to lose by pushing harder. By the time the sun fully cleared the horizon, she had made her decision. She would return to the guardian's chamber tonight, and this time she would not leave without the magic she needed. She descended the spiral stairs to her workroom and began pulling volumes from their shelves. The fortress walls felt thinner now, less protective. Every creak of stone made her pause. But fear was useless, so she turned it into fuel. Her fingers flew across pages of forbidden texts, searching for anything she had missed. The guardian had rejected her approach for decades because she lacked something it valued. Worthiness. The word tasted bitter. Tonight she would show it what worthiness really meant. She would bring force, desperation, and the certainty that comes from having no path backward. The warning on her door had burned away her last hesitation. Someone knew. Someone would act. Therefore, she would strike first.
