Chapter 1

Magpie Clutterback stopped chasing the whisper only when it answered from her own back. For months she had tracked a voice through the junk city, sure that one buried piece of scrap was calling her name. Her pack held wire, a button, three pine needles snagged in her curly hair, and a hundred other salvaged things. But the whisper came from none of them. It came from the sealed box she had carried for years and never opened. She knelt on the cracked sidewalk, near a tree hung with rusted cans that clinked in the wind. The clinking almost drowned the sound. Almost. She dug through the pack, past a bent spoon and a broken frame, until her fingers found the box. Worn cardboard. Soft corners. A dark stain across the lid. It hummed against her palm like a trapped bee. Magpie set it on the pavement and did not touch the lid. She had told herself the box held nothing. Just weight. Just habit. If she opened it, that lie was gone. She stood and backed away toward a towering heap of shopping carts draped in purple cloth. Maybe she could leave the box here and walk on. But the whisper followed her. It rose when she stepped back, thinned when she stepped close. Whatever rode inside had been steering her the whole time. Every town she'd passed. Every night she'd refused to sleep twice in one place. She had thought running was her own idea. That made her angry enough to move. She grabbed the box and carried it to an abandoned donation bin. Faded letters read fill a bin for a buck. She could drop the box through the slot and be free of it. Her hand hovered at the dark opening. The hum grew frantic, high and pleading, like something afraid of the dark. Magpie pulled the box back against her chest. She could not throw away the only thing that had ever spoken to her. Her hands shook. She pried up one soft corner. Then the whole lid. Inside sat a small gray stone, smooth as an egg. It was warm. The whisper stopped the instant she saw it, as if it had only ever wanted to be found. On the stone's surface, scratched by no tool she knew, was a single word: HOME. Magpie did not have a home. She had not had one in years. She stared at the word until her eyes stung. The stone pulsed once, warm against her fingers. Then a new sound reached her. Not from the box. From somewhere ahead, past the donation bin, past the cart heap. A low, dragging rattle, like a chain pulled over gravel. The stone grew hotter, pulling her toward the noise. Whatever had been riding her back wanted her to walk toward that sound. And now she knew its name.
