Chapter 1

Maisy wanted to open the finest wellness spa in town, but she had no place to put it. For three weeks she had walked every empty storefront on Main Street. Each one cost more than her savings. She had the massage tables in storage, the oils, the soft towels folded and waiting. She had everything but four walls to hold them. This morning she stood in front of an old stone building at the edge of town. Water once ran through this place. She could see the twin arched doors, the worn wood, the green stains bleeding down the pale stone. Steam still curled from two vents in the roof. She pushed the wooden door. It scraped open. Inside, the air smelled of damp rock and old mineral water. Two stone basins sat sunk into the floor. Warm water still trickled from a cracked pipe into one of them. Maisy touched the surface. It was hot. A spring fed this building, and no one had shut it off. She stood very still and did the math. A working hot spring meant she needed no boiler, no water heater, no costly plumbing. The soaking pools were already carved into the stone. Nature had built the hardest, most expensive part of a spa for her. The walls were solid. The roof leaked, but roofs could be fixed. Maisy pulled out her phone and searched the town records. The building belonged to no one. It had sat abandoned for forty years. The town held the deed. That meant she could not just take it. She had to convince the council to let her have it. She drove straight to the tax office. A clerk pulled the file and frowned. The old bathhouse was town property, he said. To claim it she would need council approval and a business license. The next council meeting was that evening. Maisy did not go home. She spent the afternoon writing. She listed what the town would gain: a repaired building, new jobs, a place for tired neighbors to rest. She printed photos of the basins and the steaming water. At six o'clock she walked into the meeting and set her pages on the table. The council members passed her photos around. She talked for ten minutes without stopping. She promised to fix the roof at her own cost. She promised the doors would open to everyone. An older member asked one question: could she truly afford the repairs? Maisy said yes, though her stomach tightened as she said it. They voted. Five hands went up. The bathhouse was hers, granted on one hard condition. She had ninety days to make it safe and open, or the deed returned to the town. Maisy walked back to the stone building in the dark. She unlocked her own door for the first time. The water still steamed in the basins. She finally had her space. Now she had ninety days and almost no money to build a spa inside a ruin.
