Chapter 1

Malachi Deephollow knelt in the mud and poured his last vial of blood onto the dirt. The stain sank in and did nothing. No cold wind. No whisper from his god. His tentacles coiled tight against his red robes. For twenty years he had waited to open a door for the Deep One who slept beneath the sea. Tonight the ritual should have cracked that door open. Instead the ground swallowed his blood like any patch of ordinary earth. He struck the dirt with a wet tentacle. The problem was clear, and it shamed him. This ground was not holy. No altar stood here. No god had ever been named over this soil. A ritual needs sacred ground, and Malachi had none. Every chant he spoke would fizzle into silence until he made this place his god's own. A branch snapped behind him. Brother Crimson stepped from the trees, dragging a shovel. His follower wore a shabby white robe and a red mask carved into a jagged grin. Malachi had raised him from a lost, starving boy. Now the mask hid whatever face the years had made. "You failed again," Brother Crimson said. He did not sound cruel. He sounded tired. "The ground is dead," Malachi said. "I cannot wake it alone." Brother Crimson planted the shovel. "Then we consecrate it. Blood in the dirt. A marker. A witness. The old way." Malachi looked past him. A twisted tree grew nearby, its trunk carved with old cult signs. Runes hung from its branches on frayed cords. It had watched their gatherings for years. It could serve as the witness. A god needs a place that remembers. "Dig at the roots," Malachi said. They worked through the dark. Brother Crimson broke the earth. Malachi wrapped his tentacles around the tree and pressed his own flesh against the bark until it split. His blood ran down into the fresh hole. He spoke his god's name aloud, again and again, until the word felt carved into the air. Something answered. The runes on the branches swung without wind. The blood in the hole did not sink. It gathered and held, dark and shining. The soil under Malachi's knees turned cold, then colder, until his breath showed white. The tree groaned like a throat clearing. Brother Crimson stumbled back. "It's listening," he whispered. "It is claimed," Malachi said. He pressed his tentacle to the frozen ground. This was sacred now. His god owned this dirt. A ritual would hold here at last. Then the cold spread past the tree. It crept toward the village downhill, killing grass in a black line. From the dark came a single eye on a thin stalk, watching them. It had not been summoned. It had come because the door was cracking open, and other things had felt it too.
