Chapter 1

Maple Whisperwood crouched at the edge of the tree line and checked her compass for the hundredth time that morning. Three years of searching had narrowed to this stretch of woods, where the light bent strange and the moss grew in patterns that did not match any map. She pressed the photograph flat against her thigh, thumb brushing the curve of her mother's laughing face. Her knife sat ready at her hip. She did not know what waited past the trees, but she had stopped needing to know. She only needed to keep moving forward. She pushed through the brush and stopped cold. A stone archway opened in the hillside, lanterns glowing along a stairway lined with books. At the bottom step lay a torn poster with a woman's face and the word WANTED. Maple recognized the small healing mark above the door from a bakery sign two towns back. Inside, on a reading stand, sat an old chronicle open to a hand-drawn map of the valley. Boots scraped stone somewhere behind her. Maple grabbed the chronicle, slid it into her pack, and ran. She did not stop until the trees swallowed her again. Crouched behind a fallen log, she opened the book with shaking hands. Names filled the margins. Her mother's name. Her father's. A small inked star beside each. Maple pressed her palm flat against the page and breathed. The valley was real. Someone had been writing them down. Behind her, a twig snapped, and a low voice called a name she did not know. Maple closed the book, tightened her pack, and chose a direction that was not home. She moved fast and low, weaving between trunks. At the base of a split rock, she saw it — a small carved stone set into the moss, its spiral rune fresh and deep. The same mark had been scratched into the doorframe of the sanctuary. A hunter's sign. They were already close, and now she carried what they wanted. Maple tucked the chronicle deeper into her pack and pushed forward into the strange light, the woman in the poster no longer a stranger but a thread she could not drop.
