Chapter 5

Kargoth gave Mara three days. On the third dawn she stood in her garden and watched the smoke of distant fires. The warlord's men were burning fields nearby to prove his promise. Her blue rose sat grafted to its purple bush, bright and helpless in the open ground. One torch would end it, and end her entry too. She had no guards, no wall, no way to fight. She ran to the one person who might help. Rosa Whale knelt in her flower beds beside the pine cottage, pressing soil around a row of purple roses. Dirt streaked her apron. She looked up and read Mara's face at once. "He's coming for the rose," Mara said. "Today. I can't stop him." Rosa wiped her hands and stood. "No, you can't. Not with thorns and burlap." She studied the smoke on the horizon. "But maybe you don't fight him. Maybe you shame him." "Shame a warlord?" "The whole valley knows your rose now. The trader talk reached every village." Rosa's voice dropped. "A warlord who burns a famous flower looks like a coward who fears a woman and a garden. Let the people see it. Let them stand between." Mara saw the plan take shape. She spent the day carrying word from stall to stall. She told them Kargoth meant to burn the rose that had made Pinehollow proud. By dusk a crowd gathered at her garden's edge. Rosa came with armfuls of her own purple roses and handed them out. People held the blooms like small shields. They lit the stone lanterns along the garden path as the sky darkened. The glowing chambers threw warm light across the beds. The crowd stood in that light, silent, flowers in their fists. Kargoth rode in with a torch and six men. He stopped when he saw the wall of villagers. His hand tightened on a sword at his hip, its blade marked with faint runes. He stared at the single blue rose behind the lanterns, then at the hundreds of faces watching him. "Burn it," Mara called out, "and every village hears you feared a flower." Kargoth's horse stamped. He looked at the lantern light on the lifted roses. A warlord lived on fear, not laughter. He could not afford to be the man who lost a story. He wheeled his horse and threw the torch into the dirt, where it hissed out. "Keep your weed," he spat. "It's beneath me." He rode off into the dark, his men behind him. The crowd breathed out. The blue rose still stood, whole and bright. Rosa gripped Mara's arm. "You saved it. But understand what just happened." She nodded at the villagers lowering their flowers. "These people stood for you tonight. The valley hated the Kellison name this morning. Now they're holding roses at your gate." Her smile faded a little. "Winning the crown means winning them for good. One brave night won't do that."
