Chapter 1

Mara Vance had chased the Selwick killer for ten years, and now she had eleven minutes. The radio call named a fresh body near the old rail yard. She knew the pattern by heart. Same cuts. Same posing. The same man who had haunted this town since she was a rookie. But she also knew the cleanup crew. City workers arrived fast and scrubbed scenes before detectives could read them. If they touched this one, she lost the only untainted evidence she'd had in years. She took the corners hard and left her car half on the curb. The body lay against a rusted fence, wrists crossed the way he always crossed them. Two men in gray coveralls already dragged a hose toward the gravel. A supervisor waved a clipboard and shouted that the site was cleared for cleaning. "Stop," Mara said. She held up her badge. "This is an active homicide. Nobody sprays anything." The supervisor pointed at his paperwork. The order was signed. He didn't care whose name was on her badge. Mara needed someone who could pull truth from dirt faster than a hose could erase it. She made one call. Elara Prentiss arrived in six minutes, ink-stained gray gloves already on her hands. Mara had worked with the archivist twice before, and both times Elara had found the detail everyone else stepped over. She crouched at the fence line without a word to the shouting men. "Give me two minutes," Elara said. "Keep the water off the gravel." Mara planted herself between the workers and the body. The supervisor threatened to call her captain. She told him to go ahead. Behind her, Elara moved along the ground like she was reading a page. She touched a broken weed. She pointed to a smear in the dust. "He knelt here," Elara said. "Not the victim. The killer." She lifted something with two fingers. A single thread, pale blue, caught on the fence wire. "This isn't the victim's. Look at the coat." The dead man wore brown. The thread was blue. Mara bagged it herself. Her hands were steady, but her heart was not. In ten years she had never held a piece of him. Only bodies. Only guesses. The supervisor finally reached the captain on his phone. Two minutes later he smiled and turned the hose valve. Water hit the gravel and washed the scene to mud. But Mara already had the thread sealed in her pocket. "That color," Elara said quietly. "I've catalogued a coat like that. In the city hall records. Worn by someone who works there." Mara stared at the small blue thread through the plastic. For a decade the killer had been a shadow with no face. Now she had a fiber, and a place to start looking. The scene was gone. The lead was not.
