Mara pulled a fresh stack of notices from her coat and stopped cold at the posting board. Papers layered over papers. Old names hid under new ones. Somewhere in this mess were hikers still lost, and families still waiting. She had sworn to bring every one of them home. The big cat sunning beside her station lifted its head, watching her work. Mara yanked the nails free and dumped every notice into a tin pail. She would rebuild the board from nothing. She sorted the papers on the rough plank counter. Found. Missing. Unknown. Her charcoal stub scratched dates beside each name. The cat padded closer and nosed a curled slip toward her boot. By dusk, the board held only the unfound. Six names. Six faces. She tied fresh string between them, marking last-seen points and shared trails. Two notices linked to the same ridge. Another pair shared a date. Patterns she had never seen before. Mara stepped back, breath tight. The board was clean now, and the truth was worse than chaos. Six people were still out there, and she finally knew where to start looking.
