Mara pushed downslope after the badger, but the wind shifted hard. Fresh snow poured into the prints behind her. Ahead, the dark line of claw marks softened, blurred, then began to vanish. She crouched and brushed at the trail. White filled it faster than her glove could clear. She stood and turned a slow circle. Gray on gray. No ridge, no tree, no shape. Only one thing held its edge — a tall post behind her, the last marker before the safe zone ended. Its bold silhouette cut the white like a knife. If she lost sight of it, she lost everything. Mara made a hard choice. She drove her staff deep into the snow beside the fading badger track. Then she unclipped a strip of bright cloth from her pack and tied it to the staff's head. A marker of her own. She stepped back toward the tall post, counting paces, eyes fixed on the silhouette. At the post she found what she had hoped for — a small weatherproof shelter tucked at its base, low stone and timber, built for trackers caught in storms. She forced the door. Inside, dry air. A bench. And on a shelf, a sealed case holding a reinforced UAV, sleek and rugged, built for skies that killed her last drone. Mara lifted it out with steady hands. The badger trail was gone. But she had shelter, she had eyes again, and she had marked the last place the path had been. The storm had taken her guide. It had not taken her search.
