Marcus stood at the edge of the swamp, waiting. He'd been coming here for weeks now, always after dark, always alone. The water moved slowly around cypress roots. Insects hummed. He wasn't hunting — he'd fed two days ago. He was looking for something harder to find than blood. Someone who could see what he was and still choose to stay. Someone who wouldn't run when they understood that forever meant watching everyone else fade while he remained. The search felt impossible most nights, but he kept coming back. Footsteps pressed into the wet ground behind him. Marcus turned. A figure stood on the trampled riverbank, backlit by moonlight filtering through the trees. The stranger carried something heavy, held close to their chest. They didn't speak. They just walked forward, slow and steady, until Marcus could see their face. No fear there. No hesitation. They set the object down between them — a small stone altar, carved with symbols Marcus recognized from centuries ago. Symbols that meant vampire. Symbols that meant they knew. The stranger spoke first. "I've been looking for you." Their voice was calm. Matter-of-fact. They gestured toward the pale green Victorian house visible through the trees, its wraparound porch lit by a single lamp. "I moved in three weeks ago. Heard the stories about someone who walks the swamp at night and never ages. Thought I'd wait until you were ready to be found." They met his eyes without flinching. "I know what you are. I'm not leaving." Marcus felt something shift in his chest. Not hope exactly — hope hurt too much after all these years. But possibility. This person had planted roots here. They'd brought an altar that proved they'd done their research. They'd waited on this riverbank night after night, knowing he might never come. And now they stood here, steady and unafraid, offering something he'd almost stopped believing existed. A beginning.
